World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day 2021

June 8th, 2021 was World Oceans Day. We couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate than at the Coral Nursery! To mark the event, Jennifer Keck, Education Coordinator at the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences, led a group of volunteer guests on a Coral Nursery maintenance dive.

Protecting and restoring Roatan’s most vital resource is one of the most important parts of our mission at Anthony’s Key Resort. From eliminating single-use plastics at the resort and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels to promoting conservation through our marine educational programs, we strive to sustain the health of our oceans.

The ocean’s coral reefs are among our planet’s most vital ecosystems. Sadly, they are also one of the most threatened. Responding to this steady decline and the recognition that coral reefs may not be able to recover naturally without human intervention, Anthony’s Key Resort partnered with the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences to create a coral restoration program in 2016.  Since the inception of the Coral Nursery, we’ve successfully out-planted fragments from our nursery-reared corals and returning them back to the reef.

The ocean covers more than 70% of our planet. Producing at least 50% of the earth’s oxygen, the ocean is also home to most of the planet’s biodiversity. It’s our life source, supporting the sustenance of every living creature on earth.  We are fully committed to doing our part in helping our oceans thrive!

Here’s what our guests had to say about the Coral Nursery Maintenance Dive on World Oceans Day!
