Tour the Maya Key Animal Rescue

One of the highlights of the island is our animal rescue center. The center has partnered with Words Vets, an aid organization that offers veterinary services to 45 countries around the world. Guests can tour the facility, which houses numerous exotic wildlife, such as jungle cats and colorful birds. You’ll be able to get a great view of these magnificent animals in a safe and comfortable environment. The animals at Maya Key’s Animal Rescue are all donated, injured, or rescued with the intention of being rehabilitated and released back into the wild when possible. If you’d like to get a closer look at some of Roatan’s native species during your visit, this is one of the best and most ethical ways of doing so. 

Maya Key is also a participant in many ongoing projects. For example, working with local NGOs such as the Roatan Marine Park with turtle rescues and releases and with BICA’s (Bay Islands Conservation Association) environmental education programs in local schools.

Enjoy Time on the Water

There are plenty of great opportunities to lounge on the beach, paddleboard, or snorkel during your time on the island. Explore the Great Mesoamerican Reef, which is the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere and the second-largest in the world. You’ll see colorful coral and Caribbean fish, all while soaking up the warm Caribbean sun.

Travel Back in Time at Maya Key

If you’re interested in learning a little more about our local culture, start by checking out the Mayan Interpretation Center! You’ll learn about the legacy of the Mayans in this region, as well as see some gorgeous reproductions. Don’t miss the displays of pottery, jewelry, and other craftsmanship at the Art Center. Finally, don’t miss the opportunity to learn about the Mesoamerican Ballgame! This is the first sport in the history of humanity and dates back to 2,500 B.C. There’s a Copan Mayan Ball Court replica on the island, where you can learn how the game was played.
