Our Home, Our Responsibility

Anthony’s Key Resort has been part of Roatan since 1968. As a family-owned resort with deep roots on the island, we have a responsibility that extends beyond providing memorable vacations. It includes supporting the people who make those experiences possible, contributing to the local economy, investing in education, and working with organizations that help protect Roatan’s future.

Our approach to social responsibility is grounded in long-term relationships and practical action. We aim to create opportunities through local employment, strengthen community institutions, preserve the history and culture of the Bay Islands, and encourage tourism that benefits the place we are proud to call home.

Our Social Responsibility Priorities

Creating local employment, developing skills, and maintaining a respectful and responsible workplace.

Working with local businesses whenever practical and keeping tourism spending within the community.

Supporting hands-on learning through RIMS and educational programs for students.

Helping protect the history, culture, and natural resources that shape life in the Bay Islands.

Supporting Local Employment and Professional Growth

Our Team Is at the Heart of the Resort

More than 200 team members contribute to the daily operation of Anthony’s Key Resort, and 97% of our staff are local. Their work spans guest services, reservations, housekeeping, food and beverage, diving, boating, maintenance, landscaping, security, administration, and many other areas. Our team members have an average tenure of at least 15 years; many have served over 30 years, and one employee has served the resort since 1982. Providing employment in Roatan allows tourism to deliver direct, lasting benefits to local families. It also gives our guests the opportunity to experience the island through the knowledge, hospitality, and stories of the people who live here.

Training and Skills Development

We are committed to ongoing training that helps employees build professional skills, work safely, and provide attentive service. Training across the resort supports both individual development and the high standards our guests expect. By investing in our team, we strengthen the resort while helping develop skills that contribute to Roatan’s wider tourism economy.

Supporting Local Businesses

Tourism has a greater positive impact when its benefits extend into the surrounding community. Whenever practical, Anthony’s Key Resort purchases goods and services from local businesses that can meet our operational, quality, safety, and supply requirements.

These relationships support other businesses, service providers, and working families while helping keep more of the economic value generated by tourism within Roatan and Honduras.

Local purchasing is an ongoing effort. As the resort’s needs evolve, we continue looking for opportunities to work with reliable local suppliers and service providers.

Education, Science, and Opportunity

Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences

In 1989, the owners of Anthony’s Key Resort established the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences (RIMS) with the primary objective of preserving Roatan’s natural resources through education and research.

Located at the resort, RIMS welcomes university and high school groups from abroad. Students participate in structured programs focused on marine science, coral reef studies, oceanography, biology, and bottlenose dolphins. The close connection between classrooms, laboratories, accommodations, dive facilities, and the surrounding marine environment creates valuable opportunities for field-based learning.

Through these programs, students gain firsthand experience with tropical marine ecosystems while developing a deeper understanding of conservation and the responsibilities we share toward the natural world.

Preserving Roatan’s History and Culture

The Roatan Museum

The Roatan Museum was created by the resort’s owners in 1992 with guidance and expertise from the Honduran Institute of Anthropology. Housed within the RIMS facility at Anthony’s Key Resort, the museum shares the history and culture of the Bay Islands through artifacts, murals, maps, and historical documents.

The museum gives guests, students, and residents an opportunity to learn more about the communities, traditions, and events that have shaped Roatan. Preserving this history is an important part of protecting the island’s identity for future generations.

Longstanding Community and Conservation Partnerships

Anthony’s Key Resort believes lasting progress comes through cooperation. The resort and its owners were instrumental in establishing and developing both the Bay Islands Conservation Association and the Roatan Marine Park, and we continue to support the work of both organizations.

Bay Islands Conservation Association

Founded in 1990, the Bay Islands Conservation Association (BICA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the natural resources of Roatan, Utila, and Guanaja. Its work includes research and environmental monitoring, conservation and restoration, environmental education, and community development.

In 2026, BICA recognized Anthony’s Key Resort for its continued support during the organization’s 35th anniversary year. This relationship reflects a shared commitment to protecting the ecosystems that sustain the Bay Islands and their communities.

Roatan Marine Park

Since 2005, the Roatan Marine Park has worked with communities, government authorities, businesses, and conservation partners to protect Roatan’s marine and coastal ecosystems. Its work includes marine patrols, mooring and marine infrastructure, scientific research, environmental education, reef restoration, and community programs.

Our continued support for the Roatan Marine Park helps advance the collective effort to protect the reefs and coastal resources central to Roatan’s environment, economy, and way of life.

Supporting Community Well-Being

Over the years, Anthony’s Key Resort and its owners have contributed to community initiatives related to youth development, education, public health, and emergency support.

Local Charities

Among these efforts, SOL International recognized the resort in 2009 for its support of youth sports and after-school education. In 2007, the Little Friends Foundation expressed its appreciation for a contribution toward the expansion and renovation of the French Harbour Public Health Center.

Supporting Local Sports

Anthony’s Key Resort supports local sports programs that encourage participation, teamwork, and opportunities for young people and athletes across Roatan. From 2020 through 2026, we provided financial assistance, uniforms, and equipment to the Juventus youth soccer team, the Roatan Volleyball League, and the island’s annual fishing tournament. These contributions help strengthen community connections, support local talent, and make organized sports more accessible to local families.

Dolphin Encounters Supporting Inclusion and Well-Being

Through the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences (RIMS), Anthony’s Key Resort provides complimentary, supervised dolphin encounters for children and adults with disabilities and their families. These experiences offer participants a safe and supportive opportunity to interact with dolphins under the guidance of trained personnel while sharing a meaningful experience with their loved ones.

From 2020 through 2026, 2,160 people participated in these dolphin-assisted programs.

Community Cleanups

We also sponsor community cleanups, with members of our team helping collect litter from local beaches and other areas throughout Sandy Bay. These efforts bring employees together while helping maintain a cleaner, healthier environment for residents and visitors.

Islanders for Change: Developing Future Conservation Leaders

Anthony’s Key Resort supports BICA’s Islanders for Change, a 12-week program that prepares young adults to become future conservation leaders. Participants receive hands-on training in marine monitoring, coral restoration, data collection, laboratory work, and PADI Open Water diving. During educational visits to the resort, they explore the Roatan Museum and Hyperbaric Clinic, expanding their knowledge of dive safety, island history, culture, biodiversity, and marine conservation.

These are just a few examples of a broader commitment to supporting projects that strengthen the community and improve opportunities for people in Roatan.

Recognition from Roatan’s Civic Leaders

Anthony’s Key Resort was recognised by the Governor of the Bay Islands, the Municipality of Roatan, the Federation of Patronatos, and the Citizen Council of Roatan for its longstanding support of efforts to improve the quality and safety of tourism and help build a better future for Roatan.

Blue Economy Navigator Award

On June 5, 2026, Roatan Marine Park and BAC Honduras presented the Blue Economy Navigator Award to Anthony’s Key Resort General Manager, Samir Galindo. The award recognized his visionary leadership, guidance, and unwavering commitment to strengthening business resilience on the island of Roatán.

Responsible Tourism That Respects Roatan

We believe tourism should respect the character of the destination and contribute to the well-being of the people who live there. At Anthony’s Key Resort, that means creating local employment, working with nearby businesses, sharing Roatan’s history, supporting education, and collaborating with organizations dedicated to the island’s future.

It also means helping guests understand that Roatan is more than a vacation destination. It is a living community with a distinctive culture, a remarkable natural environment, and generations of people whose knowledge and hospitality make every visit meaningful.

Our environmental initiatives, including renewable energy, water conservation, waste reduction, coral restoration, and responsible marine tourism, are detailed on our Sustainability page.

Our Commitment Continues

Social responsibility is not a single program or contribution. It is an ongoing commitment reflected in how we operate, whom we work with, and how we plan for the future.

As Anthony’s Key Resort continues to grow, we remain committed to supporting our employees, strengthening local relationships, expanding educational opportunities, preserving Roatan’s heritage, and contributing to tourism that benefits both visitors and the community.

Roatan is our home. Its people, culture, and natural beauty have shaped Anthony’s Key Resort since 19, and caring for its future remains one of our most important responsibilities.
